New!  Join the Arts Parent Leadership Committee.  Committee meets quarterly at different schools throughout the Valley.  Annual membership dues of $25 entitles parents to receive updated information on resources available to schools via our newsletter and e-mails, entries into drawings to receive art supplies, field trips and assemblies, tickets to our annual artists studio tour, and a complimentary copy of our Arts Education Resource Directory.

Arts Parent Leadership Council Members Understand:

·    that they are their child’s first and most influential teacher.  They understand their child’s own learning style and advocate for proper teaching methods and resources so their child will thrive in school.

·    that all children are unique individuals and learn differently and that they all need different kinds of experiences and support.

·    that the whole child needs to be nurtured in the school environment so they can realize their own potential.

·    that the arts play a unique role in their child’s growth and education.  They take their child to arts activities and events such as museums, concerts, galleries, plays and festivals.  They pause to talk with their children about what they see and hear.

·    that ALL children learn better when they are exposed to the arts.

·    that society works better when children have access to the arts in school so that they will learn the value of collaboration, interdependence, and compassion.

·    that creativity is the solution to problems and that sometimes it is necessary to take a risk and color outside of the lines.

·     that arts education brings people together and fosters sensitivity to others while celebrating one’s own individuality and self-responsibility.  It also promotes interdependence, investigation and curiosity, qualities that are needed to become successful adults.

·    that the whole community benefits when children grow to become conscious, informed, respectful, engaged, compassionate and happy adults, all qualities that are developed when the arts are a regular part of a child’s education.

·    that a few parents have the power to change one school for the better,  and that a collective group of parents can change the world.

The Value of Arts Education

Belief Statement

We believe that in order for children to receive a well rounded, public education that it must include the arts, free of high stakes testing which diminishes critical thinking skills and disconnects children from their own learning process.  We believe that through the arts, that creativity and humanity can be restored to the classroom.  Creative children will be given back ways to succeed in school and will regain the respect of their teachers, peers and selves.  We believe that the arts are the only true and honest path to other cultures and that by introducing one another to each other’s art, music, dance, and traditions, we will really begin to respect and delight in one another.  We believe that when children are in crisis that the arts give them a way to express themselves in a healthy way.  Finally, we believe that all children learn in different ways and that the current educational model addresses and rewards only one style of learning, labeling students as “academic” (successful) and “non-academic” (not successful).  Many of the “non-academic” students are marginalized or misdiagnosed by the system as having some sort of learning disability.   There is nothing wrong with these children. The system is failing them.  Now more than ever, we need the arts.

FAMILY ART DAY

Looking for an event to bring more parents onto campus?  Try hosting a Family Art Day where students are invited to bring their families to school one evening or on a weekend to create art together.  This is a great event by itself or can be designed to work in conjunction with other activities.  It's also a creative way to make money for the school.  To find out how you can host a Family Art Day on campus, call us at 610-2050 or download our ideas here.

Art Club Kits

We would like to encourage all elementary schools to start an after school art club on campus. It’s a very easy, manageable project to start and run. You don’t need to be an artist or teacher to run a successful club. Anyone can do it. In fact, we have written a handbook to help schools do just that.

An after school art club is a great way to keep kids creative and busy after the school day is over. Kids who participate in Art Club benefit from the experience by knowing the pride that comes from not only creating their own art, but by creating projects for the school community as a whole. Art Club can design all of your school signage, fliers and decorations. Your school benefits by having such creative support from its students. The signage and decorations make a difference in school morale and ambience!
